How to train a Chihuahua may be daunting you at every step - how is it done? Perhaps you are having trouble with an unruly dog or maybe you have or plan to get a tiny little pup and want it to grow up acting as it should. Where should you start?
One of the methods that are getting hot with trainers right now is the 'click method'. In this method a 'clicker', which is available at some pet stores, is used to train the dog. Here's how it works: The first step in click training is to set your dog on a chair, bed, sofa, or some other surface that he can't get off of. The 'clicker' is then clicked and the dog is given a small treat. Repeat this several times, until your doggie relates a click with a treat. This may take some time-don't expect your Chihuahua to get it in one lesson, it may take as much as 100 click-treat parings before he makes the connection! Remember: give tiny treats!
The next step, introduce the command. When your dog makes the connection, then give him a command, let's say "Sit." Start by saying your Chihuahua's name before the command, "Frisky, sit." Waiting only for a millisecond after the command, help him perform what was asked of him: right after the "Frisky, sit", lure his front end up by holding a treat above and just behind the muzzle. If your Chihuahua jumps for his treat, don't give it to him. If he bends his hind legs to get the treat, click your clicker and reward Frisky with the treat. Do it again, clicking and giving the treat as he performs actions closer to the sitting position. Finally, Frisky sits, you click and reward.
Let's try another one, the command 'stay'. First step, hold Frisky there for a moment and then let go and step a few feet away, "Frisky, stay." Remember: only expect him to stay for a few seconds at first. If he stays, click and reward. Don't reward him if he starts coming toward you though. Repeat until he does it right a few times. If Frisky starts getting good at that distance, back up a little more. Continue getting farther and farther away over a period of time. Keep after him until he stays like a pro.
When training, remember to keep sessions short and end on a positive note. In other words if Frisky does start coming toward you when teaching to stay and you get so frustrated that you just pick him up and shove him in his kennel, then he's probably going to get the idea that when he does that he gets put up. No! Keep going until he does what you want him to. Then you reward him and put him up.
Now you know how to train a Chihuahua with just a few steps, using the simple 'click method'. Enjoy your trained Chihuahua!
