Being able to play the guitar with speed and accuracy is a skill new guitar students need to start working towards from their very first guitar lesson. If you want to learn the guitar solos to your favorite songs, become a great electric guitarist, or even learn classical or flamenco guitar styles, you need to hone your speed skills.
Thankfully, there are some guitar speed exercises that can help you reach your goal of being able to play guitar with speed and accuracy. With daily perseverance and determination, in no time you'll be able to keep up with any song tempo and become an all-round better guitarist.
Tip #1: Do finger exercises daily. Like any learned skill, practice makes perfect. Warm up your fingers by practicing scales or patterns that make your fingers stretch, even before moving on to exercises specially designed to improve your speed as a guitarist.
Tip #2: Strength leads to speed. A good guitar speed exercise should strengthen your fingers at the same time that it trains them to move quickly. Consider Bruce Lee. The reason he was such a great fighter was because of both his speed and strength. But without his strength, however fast he might have naturally been, his speed as a fighter would have been useless. It's exactly the same with guitar. Without proper training and finger-strengthening, don't expect to make much progress at becoming a fast guitar player.
Tip #3: Train both hands. Playing guitar is done with two hands. Therefore, it only makes sense to train both hands to play with speed and accuracy. Learning how to use and hold a pick effectively when playing fast guitar songs is just as important as being able to move around the fret board quickly with your left hand. Also, the types of exercises you need to do with your left and right hands are different, since each hand is used in very different ways when playing the guitar.
Tip #4: Time yourself. A great way to encourage yourself to become a faster guitarist is to record your progress and try to outdo yourself everyday. Time yourself playing a chromatic scale. Write down how long it took you to play, and try to beat your speed the next day. With the correct guitar speed exercises, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to beat your own record repeatedly.
Tip #5: Pay attention to sound quality. In all honestly, many guitarists can play fast. Unfortunately, not every fast guitarist can play with both speed and precision. It's important that you don't sacrifice sound quality by playing faster than you feel comfortable. Fast guitar parts are only pleasing to the hear when they are accurate, controlled, and dynamic. Be sure to maintain and develop your skills so that you become not only a fast guitarist, but a guitarist with an ear for quality.
There are many guitar speed exercises, but not all of them are necessarily effective. A good exercise needs to come from a good guitar teacher. If the person teaching you cannot play quickly and accurately, there's no reason to believe that the exercises that instructor is teaching you will be effective.
