Put-Downs: The Whole Story
What put-downs really are
Let me begin by saying what they are not. Put-downs are
not "harmless jokes." The test of the difference between a
put-down and a joke is this: Would the jokester be happy if
someone he respected used that very same so-called joke on
him?
Put-downs are not "constructive criticism." At a construction
site, people are building something. To construct is to build.
To give the kind of criticism that is constructive, you must
see evidence of it helping the receiver to grow. For instance,
when my children were little, they took music lessons. When
they hit a wrong note after having practiced long and hard,
the teacher would say, "I can tell you have been practicing
well." She would then recite, very specifically, five or so
things they did well. Then-and only then-she would say, "Now
play that [name of note] again for me." If it was right this
time, she would say, "Do you hear the difference from before?"
This helped the child feel good about what was done right
and turned the mistake into an opportunity to train the ear.
In contrast, "You played the wrong note!" is just plain criticism, not constructive and, "You played the wrong note again. I don't know what's the matter with you" is a put-down guaranteed for the child to hate music and ruin your relationship.
Put-downs are not the best way to express exasperation with
those you love. What is heard and received is rejection and
the response is to reciprocate that rejection, to feel depressed
over that kind of treatment, or to get out.
Put-downs are anything that attacks the other person or
what that person holds dear. They can be as subtle as eyeball-rolling or a cold tone of voice. They can be as obvious as cursing. They can be things in between such as referring to your son's friends as "oh, those people," and your husband's skill at
softball as "it was great 30 years ago." The best way to know
if you have put someone down is ask your heart what your feelings really are about the person it was directed to. The best way to know if you have been put down is to ask your heart if it feels proud after hearing that remark. The heart knows.
The damage they do to the soul
Unfortunately, unlike a courtroom in which the judge can
instruct the jury to "please disregard that," once said, a
put-down enters the soul in much the same way a virus enters
a cell: destructively. Each and every time a put-down is leveled
at someone, the soul is injured badly. You can actually see
this on the outside: the smile is not so bright; grades drop;
work suffers; car accidents occur.
People who hear put-downs long enough begin to doubt themselves.
They begin to think there must indeed be something wrong with
them or those they love wouldn't hurt them so. They go beyond
thinking there is something-some aspect of themselves-that is wrong; rather, they think their whole selves are wrong. God, somehow mis-made them; the essence of their being is wrong.
No matter how angry you are with someone, you don't want
to do this. You may think you do, but when you act out of
anger, the damage boomerangs: Doing it injures your soul too.
And you can easily tell that it has: You somehow don't feel
happy afterward; you are not relieved or unburdoned. Rather,
you feel as miserable and perhaps as angry as you did before.
Look in your heart; you will see you are angry with yourself
now in addition to being angry with your loved one.
How they escalate
Let's look at this further: Joan is furious with Tim and
tells him off. She sees the dagger enter his heart. She sees
the look on his face. He is quiet and there is a moment of
peace. But in that moment, Joan does not feel relief. How
can she? Whatever it was that Tim did that hurt her did not
change. Nor did she give him a chance to apologize or make
it good. Nothing was corrected. Joan thought she got even
but what her heart craves is love, attention, and acceptance,
and she sure didn't set up the situation for that. Tim meanwhile
has only the foggiest idea of what he did wrong in the first
place, if he has any idea at all. But he is really mad, now
and who knows where that will lead?
Surveys of thousands of fighting couples show that bad words
can escalate into physical violence. The probability is there.
But even if that doesn't happen, at the very least-and this
isn't small potatoes-the couple (or the child) becomes alienated.
How to respond
If someone puts you down, first you have to recognize it
for what it is. Once you do, here are four possible types
of responses.
Name it. Giving the down-putter the benefit of the doubt,
maybe he didn't realize that it was a put-down. Maybe he just
thought it was a joke or constructive criticism. Maybe he
just thought "Well, that's what I do to vent anger" without
meaning to put down. The solution here just might be to tell
it like it is and say, "That was a put down."
Throw the ball back to her court. By asking, "Did you really
want to say it that way because it was a put down," a reflective
person might think about it and realize that she didn't intend
that and make some correction or apology right on the spot.
Say it hurt. This suggestion comes with a warning: Only
do it with a person of good will. If the person who said it
is so angry that she just wants to inflict wounds, saying
it hurt can, unfortunately, lead to more abuse. For all others,
saying the put-down hurt can, indeed, put a stop to it.
Challenge. When the sender of the message honestly cannot
see that the message is highly critical and not constructive
at all, challenging the statement on a purely logical basis
can be a wonderful experience in empowerment. For example,
Sue hurts her daughter, Rochelle's feelings. Rochelle tells
her it is a put-down and it hurts. Sue replies with, "You're
too sensitive." That itself is a put-down because (a) the
word "too" is judgmental and (b) it devalues the characteristic
of "sensitivity." Rochelle can challenge this with: "How do
you know I'm too sensitive? Maybe you're too insensitive."
Put-downs are not jokes and they're not constructive. They are
virulent soul-destroyers which can lead to total alienation from
those you care about most. Sometimes naming it, saying it hurt,
throwing the ball back into the sender's court or direct challenge can put a stop to it.

Martial Arts Belts
If you do any type of martial art you will need to be disciplined to train and compete in competitions the ultimate goal is to get your martial arts belts. The more advanced you are the higher ranking taekwondo belts you will have until you are a master. Although it may take some time to advance through the stages once you have it is a very proud moment. The belt system is the best way for teachers and instructors to grade your skills and acknowledge how well you are doing.
Although the martial art belts were originally thought to be only two colors over time they have extended to several different colors. In Japan they do tend to still use a white belt and then when the student graduates then a black belt is given. Although this is fine in the western world it is more common for different colors to be used. The colors of the taekwondo belts are traditionally white, yellow, orange, purple, blue, green, brown, red and black.
Every martial art will have its own system as to the ranking of the belts and at the end of every stage you will need to take a test. This will test your skills and moves and ensure that you are ready and competent to move on to the next stage of your journey. These moves will either be done on your own or against an opponent and the instructor will decide if you are skilled enough. The higher up the ranks you go the darker the taekwondo belts are until you reach black.
Martial arts belts were not originally used and ancient instructors preferred sashes to represent the different stages. They felt the sashes were softer and easier to use but through the years belts were deemed to be comfortable and were introduced. The concept behind the taekwondo belts was to represent a journey for the student and as they pass through the stages they are becoming a man. You will need to be much focused to travel through the journey and slowly you will pass up through the ranks.
A white belt is for the beginners in the class and usually it is seen that a green martial arts belts is the intermediate stage in the journey. The introduction of the different taekwondo belts made teaching the classes easier for the instructors. They could see straight away where every student was up to in their journey. Although there are slight variations between different martial arts most of them are very similar and the martial arts belts can be seen in all classes.
As a student it will be your goal to achieve every stage in your journey and although this can be a challenge if you are focused then you will achieve your goals. You will learn how to focus your mind, body and soul and you will be fitter and more subtle. Learning any martial art is a great sport for any age and you will love the discipline and learning new skills every class.

Deflation - The Economic Elevator Going Down, Down, Down
The current economic mess is like watching a slow motion train wreck. Every week brings one more car piling up in smoke and flames along the side of the track. Indications of a major problem have been popping up recently without much fanfare - deflation.
What is deflation? It is a pronounced and continued downward spiral in prices for either a sector of the economy or the economy as a whole. We've been watching deflation occur in two big markets - housing and oil. Housing has been deflating for a year or two while oil just went into a massive, sudden downward spiral earlier this month.
If deflation means prices are going down, what's the problem? Well, deflation is like selling your soul to the devil for your grandest desires. The immediate effect is pretty nice, but the payoff in the end is a real killer. With deflation, low prices are great at first, but they tend to feed on themselves and can kill the economy.
Let's assume I make tortillas. As consumers slow their spending, I suddenly have more tortillas then I know what to do with. I have to get rid of them, so I lower my prices. I am able to sell off my inventory, but my total revenues are down. I have business debts I have to maintain, so I have no alternative but to let go of employees to save money somewhere. Now I can't produce as many tortillas and, eventually, will run into a situation where I may not have sufficient revenues to meet the monthly payments on my business debts.
Millions of businesses will be doing this. As they slash employment, the total spending by consumers will drop again. Citigroup, for instance, just announced a layoff of 52,000 people. Those 52,000 are not going to be spending money. It turns into one big loop that can be very hard to stop.
How do you fight deflation? The answer is simple - the Federal Reserve Bank cuts interest rates. By doing this, banks start lowering the cost of borrowing money. More people and business begin borrowing money and then spending it. This drives up demand and prices, thus putting deflation in the trash bin.
Unfortunately, there are two problems that really hurt us if deflation does hit the economy. The first is the simple fact that the Federal Reserve has already lowered the interest rate for banks to borrow money down to one percent. It could go to zero, but that isn't really much of a difference.
The second problem, of course, has to do with the banks. As you've probably notices, we are having a smidge of a problem in the banking industry. The current managers of most large banks have proven to be incompetent. Everyone jumped on the subprime mortgage bandwagon and it has all gone horribly wrong. The end result is any bank getting money at the moment is far more likely to hoard it to make the bottom line look better than it is to lend it. Even if banks do lend the money, who exactly is looking to take on more debt?
So, are we in serious trouble with deflation? The answer is not particularly clear at the moment. If the retail shopping season is really bad, it will not be a good sign.

Does Reiki Really Work?
As you hear more about Reiki as a healing alternative, you may find yourself inquisitive about its legitimacy. Does Reiki really work? Large followings and glowing success stories often breed skepticism, so you're not alone in asking. This is a very common question, so I've provided some simple ideas for the formation of your own informed opinion.
Know the Theory
Although Reiki is only about 90 years old in name, the underlying concept is much older. Originating in the East more than 5,000 years ago, this ancient philosophy assumes everything in existence to be energetic in nature. It also proposes that all of life is, foundationally, a complex and unending interchange of energies. Reiki claims to directly engage the source of an illness, understanding it to be a matter of energetic imbalance. The primary purpose of Reiki Energy is to restore that balance. Though differing from the more diagnostic view held by many Western doctors, this is similar in many ways to other healing forms within the holistic health system.
"Does Reiki really work?" can only be answered within context and understanding the energetic nature of the universe is your most important first step.
Know the Science
With recent scientific progress repeatedly confirming the ancient perspective, Reiki is now becoming widely recognized as a scientifically valid healing experience.
Much of our more modern science has been dedicated to understanding the human body, its cells, and its interactions in terms of electromagnetism, and the question, "Does Reiki really work?" is now being met with surprisingly affirmative responses.
The quantum view has also begun to allow researchers the framework from which to view the human body as essentially energetic, and thanks to the large body of evidence accumulated in recent years, many of the more progressive hospitals are now offering Reiki as legitimate treatment for their patients!
Form Your Own Opinion
So, does Reiki really work? Without a personal experience of your own, your answer will always be less-than-satisfactory. Whether you decide to receive a Reiki treatment or, even better, decide to learn Reiki for yourself, you will be most convinced and best educated by personal experience. Though Reiki training has traditionally been very costly and time-consuming, more modern offerings have helped to make it far more affordable and accessible.
If you're determined to know if Reiki really works, your best bet is to form your own opinion through personal experience.

Who Cracked My Crystal Ball?
It seems like an awful lot of people are asking my opinion these days, usually about things on which I have no opinion to give. They ask my take on international politics, global warming, the overseas stock markets, the future of the Eurodollar, the latest Calvin Klein fragrance, and a whole slew of other topics that I know little, if anything, about. Even my wife wants to know what I think. She's always asking things like, "Honey, does this make me look fat?" It doesn't take a genius to figure out that there's only one correct response to that question.
So the evidence is clear: either my humble opinion really does count to a lot of people or I just have a lot of people snowed. I'm leaning toward the latter since it requires far less effort on my part.
Most of these misguided folks seek my opinion for no other reason than I write this column. They think that because I can string together a couple of thousand words in a semi-coherent manner on a weekly basis, what I think must have some relevance to the world. Truth be told, most weeks this column writes itself. In fact, I don't consider myself a writer so much as a cranky chronicler of life, a benign bystander, an existential fly on the wall. I just sit on the sidelines and take note of what's happening around me, then I run it through a spell checker and report it to you. Think of me as the hall monitor in the Big School of Life. By the way, where's your hall pass?
While most people ask my opinion on current events, others want to know what I think about things that haven't even happened yet, like I'm some kind of psychic hotline operator. "Who do you think the next president will be?" they ask. "Do you think North and South Korea will ever unite? Do you think there will ever be an Irish Pope? Do you think Prince Charles' ears can get any bigger? Do you think the new Barbie will be able to wear the old Barbie's clothes?"
Since so many people seem to think that I can see into the future, not to mention that we are on the threshold of the new year, I decided to put my psychic abilities to the test. After all, I had nothing to lose and the answers to many questions to gain. Questions like: Can I really see into the future? Do I really possess the gift of foresight? If I really can see into the future, what's the best way to make a fast buck off such an ability, and more importantly, will it help me remember where I left my carkeys?
I put myself in a deep, hypnotic trance by watching an entire episode of "Baywatch" with the sound turned down, then I closed my eyes and let the visions come. For a while, all I could see was water and red bathing suits, but finally the waves did part and the future became clear.
Here, then, are my top ten predictions for the coming year:
Lisa Marie Presley will announce that she is pregnant with exhusband Michael Jackson's child. Though it is unclear whether the baby will be a boy or girl, it will be born with interchangeable parts, just like its daddy.
Speaking of Michael Jackson, the Gaudy Gloved One will decide to have a sex change operation by the end of the year. Confused doctors will announce that such surgery isn't an option for Jackson because they can't determine what sex he/she/it is now.
At the 1998 Governors' Ball held at the White House, Alabama Governor Fob James will experience a painful attack of intestinal gas while dancing with Hillary Clinton. Footage of the attack will be aired on newscasts around the country, sparking a dance craze that proves even more popular than the Macarena. In the words of "Soul Train" host Don Cornelius, "Everybody be doin' the Fob!"
It will be proven that President Bill Clinton was not only involved in Whitewater and illegal campaign fundraising, but was also instrumental in the creation of the Arch Deluxe.
Due to the lack of viable candidates to run in the next presidential election, the Republican Party will attempt to revive the political career of Ronald Reagan. The fact that he is suffering from Altzheimer's will be considered by many to be a political plus.
Microsoft head Bill Gates will consider entering politics, but will change his mind after failing to get the office of "God of Earth and Hellfire" added to the national ballot.
In a move that shocks the religious world, Pope John Paul will resign the papacy and begin a successful career as a stand-up comic. He will land his own sitcom on the Fox network called, "Chico and the Pope." Jimmy Smits will play the role of Chico.
Disgraced TV preachers Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggert are cast in a remake of the old sitcom, "Bosom Buddies." Jim and Jimmy play two God-fearing men living in a house filled with beautiful women. Neither role is considered a stretch.
Basketball great Michael Jordan's squeaky-clean image will be tarnished this year when it's revealed that he isn't really bald.
A popular internet humor columnist with the initials HLW will win fame and fortune with the publication of his book, "Men Are From Venus, Women Are From Over Yonder."
Well, what do you know, those folks were right. I can see into the future, after all. Or maybe it was all just a dream brought on by that beer and Polish sausage sandwich I had while trancing out on Baywatch. At any rate, I hope you enjoyed this article because I was charging you $3.99 a minute.
Hey, even a psychic's gotta eat.
Happy New Year, everybody!

A Dying Cat And A Nylon String Guitar
"Music isn't just learning notes and playing them, you learn notes to play to the music of your soul" - Katie Greenwood.
Why are you learning music anyway? Is it to pick up chicks? Is it to fulfill a void in your mundane life? Is it an indescribable calling?
I always wanted to learn the drums. I don't know why, maybe it's the aggressive nature of the things. You sit there and bash the crap out of them.
As fate would have it I shared a house with Dave, a guitar player, so I decided to learn the guitar as I had my very own teacher living in the next room. Or so I thought.
I went out and bought a nylon string classical guitar for $70. I didn't have a clue what I was doing but that never stopped me before.
So I went back home with my new guitar in its cardboard box. And with anything new, you want to play with it straight away, as soon as you get it home.
I also bought one of those guitar case chord dictionaries. You know the ones, they have a thousand chords in them and they are designed to confuse rather than actually help you.
So I waited for Dave to get home from work and as soon as he was in the door I was at him. "I bought this new guitar and I was wondering if you could show me how to play it" I said.
He just laughed at me but eventually agreed to show me which chords to learn first. He told me to learn the open chords A, D, E, G, and C. So I did. I spent every spare moment learning these chords.
Dave wouldn't show me any songs to play so I was forced to make up my own songs. This forced me to really explore every one of these chords as I thought at the time that I had to include them all in every song I wrote.
The songs I wrote were pretty strange to say the least. We were into punk music at that time so just imagine what a dying cat like vocals set to a nylon string out of tune guitar played as fast as a speeding train sounds like and you get the picture.
It sounded good to me at the time and I was very proud of my new found ability. It took about three months to get the hang of changing between the chords, and being able to write a song. (if you could call it that).
I didn't know it at the time but I had the one thing that was needed that would ensure I would become a good guitar player. That one thing was sheer bloody determination. And the more people told me how bad I sounded the more determined I became to improve.
So it doesn't matter how good or bad you are at the moment just play the music of your soul - even if it sounds like a cat being tortured. You will improve as long as you keep trying. Here's a mental exercise for you. Fast forward your mind to 4 years from now. How good a guitar player will you be? The time will pass regardless of what you do. Are you going to keep at it? or are you going to give up? It's up to you. You will be four years older, but will you be four years wiser?

Does Crying Cleanse the Soul?
The soul is pure and requires no cleaning, always in a state of pure love and happiness - no exceptions.
The spirit of the contrary is capable of fear, anxiety and sadness, so they expanded their story based on emotional stimulation. These thoughts and feelings can be cleaned in part, screaming, crying like the person to bring greater spiritual dedication. Sun purifies the spirit of history, caused bythe emotions, which are actually there to alert you when you are out of harmony with higher self awareness.
Therefore, the answer to the question "Does crying cleanse the Soul," can be very confusing. Let us explore the reasons why:
Scenario 1
Because the Soul is always radiating pure love, peace and harmony it does not (in spiritual reality) become anything other than what it is based upon an experience in life-situation. It stays pure and is always in acceptance of what is. It knows that the experiences of life-situation are form based; therefore, what is created in form will eventually end. As a result, when the end of something that is form based comes, it is viewed as part of the process of form returning from which it came. As a result, if the Spiritual Body is in the forefront of the individuals' alignment with the Four Body System (Spiritual, Emotional, Mental and Physical Bodies). It is expected that everything will pass that is form based and the Spiritual Body will continue on in eternal life. In this scenario sadness is still experienced and tears may come, however, the grieving process is shortened because of acceptance at a higher level of understanding that the eternal life process will continue.
Scenario 2
Conversely, most people live life with the Physical Body in the forefront of the Four Body System (Physical, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual Bodies). Therefore, life-situations have a far greater impact on them. They can easily manifest a heavy layer of sadness, which acts as a smoke screen over the pure state of Spiritual Being. The mind minimizes acceptance of what is for a period of time, and then, emotions feed the mind, which ultimately produces a reaction in the Physical Body. In Gods wisdom, crying was created to assist us in cleansing the minds perceptions of whatever is taking place in the life-situation. Therefore, crying is a wonderful way to cleanse the mind of painful emotions brought on by life-situation occurrences, thereby returning the person to acceptance of the life process. In this scenario sadness is extended for a much longer period of time and hence the grieving process continues far longer, as well as, more resultant scenes that are played out by the mind over and over.
Everyone has at some time gone through or will go through an emotionally difficult life-situation, which requires a grieving process to assist them in passing through it. This is especially true when there is a feeling of great loss, as with the death of a loved one or a relationship breakup. At these times, a good cry is one of the best ways to relieve the pain of the loss from the body. It is a totally natural way to cleanse the Mental Body of the sadness that is being experienced. Once the grieving process is complete we feel much better, because we have cleansed the mind with the assistance of crying and have returned to our natural state of happiness. The loss is accepted and the fond memories remain in the mind to continue the connection on a higher spiritual level.
Life is not always an easy journey; it can be an emotional rollercoaster of ups and downs brought on by what the mind perceives as unfair situations. When experiencing deep emotional pain it can feel unbearable in that moment. However, each moment of sorrow bring us closer to discovering the essence of who we really are. When we cry we also cleanse the build up of many emotions brought on by fear based thoughts. However, it becomes easier to cope with sadness when we live life with a deep knowing that there is an ultimate higher purpose for everything that happens. The grieving process takes less time for us to return to our higher awareness when living from this level of awareness. Yes, emotional pain is still experienced; however, acceptance of what is comes from a difference reality when living life with spirituality in the forefront of everyday life-situations.
The important point to remember when experiencing a life-situation which does not feel good, is that you are going through it, which ultimately means you will eventually arrive on the other side of the sadness brought on by life-situations. Therefore, when you are feeling unhappy one of the best remedies for returning to your natural state of happiness is to have a good cry - it cleanses the mind.

3 Simple Ways to Train Your Mind Muscles - Increase Brain Power and Concentration Skills
Our Human mind needs to be taken care of like any other part of the body. Doing simple exercises will enable you to increase brain power, improve your memory and increase your IQ among other things. If you don't challenge your mind your brain capacity will decrease, this is especially important as you get older.
The best way to improve the influence of your brain you can follow some basic rules. Like your muscles your brain must also be given some routine exercise, meditation and brisk strolling.
Mind puzzles that works your mind
A very important way to increase brain power and enhancing the power of the human brain is to involve it in different kinds of creative tasks. You can always engage in the different techniques to solve various innovative problems such as mind puzzles. Solving mathematical series do improve the analyzing skills as well as thinking power of the brain. Many critical problems can be solved and this increases the brains technical thinking. These mind power techniques are quite helpful in making the mind sharper.
A simple Concentration Technique
Deep focus always benefits to amplify the power of human intellect. Increase concentration by just making it a central theme by staring at one particular point on the wall. This is a very simple yet significant technique to improve the concentration. Apart from these there are also lots of other ways to enhance the brains potential.
Remember to Rest
Rest is also equally important. Just like you need rest after a exhausting workout at the gym, so does the brain. At least six hours of sleep is very significant for any human brain. And of course timely intake of food following a proper diet pattern is a must.
These three ways are some good and basic first steps. There are many more advanced methods you can try that will really boost your mind power and creativity.

Virtual Sales Training Now Available
Technological advances are now being utilized to provide sales training virtually and interactively to organizations replacing more traditional methods. Virtual sales training technology is now available utilizing technological advances where sales solutions and sales training can be provided to an organization via user names and passwords for a fraction of the cost of sending people off site. The technology takes no space on the company's computers, nothing gets lost, all content is delivered in high quality full motion video and no one has to be sent off site and the user can access training and solutions 24/7. For organizations dependent upon sales this revolutionary breakthrough is perfect for the current economy providing organizations with the much needed sales solutions and doing so cost effectively.
For 25 years I have been speaking to audiences on sales and motivation and this is the first time because of technological advances that we can offer organizations solutions and training in real time (24/7), when our clients need it on the exact issue challenging each individual in the company. Lets face it the world is different today and the way to effectively and efficiently train and educate the staff is even more important than ever before. Sending people off site or bringing a consultant in-house can be cost prohibitive for many companies and the sales force misses valuable opportunities to be in front of clients while doing either. Organizations are looking for new, more cost effective ways to train, educate and motivate their people at this time. Virtual sales training is not just a supplement to the organization's training efforts but for some a complete solution.
Virtual and interactive technology is allowing me to duplicate myself and deliver best sales practices tailored to the situation our clients faces, when they are challenged by them. It is like having a virtual sales coach to train, motivate, coach, consult and provide solutions 24/7 to the entire organization without adding payroll. I can literally provide the entire organization with professional sales solutions before, after, even during a transaction to improve chances of closing the deal. Full testing and accountability features allow management to know who needs help with what so the education process can be refined to what each individual needs.
With virtual sales training technology a user is given access to a virtual site with a password and then is able to access whatever issue he/she is having difficulty with, at which time I personally deliver the best possible practices for that situation in full motion-high quality video online. The user is able to access the information from their home or office when they need it with no embarrassment. We recently launched Sales Training VT and the first responses from the market to this technology have been incredible. The National Automobile Dealer Association recently announced it will use the same technology to deliver all communication to its 15,000 members starting in early 2010. Other companies see the virtual sales training solution as a way to add a HR person, manager and trainer without having to increase its payroll. With sales people spending more time on computers using CRM's, social networking and the likes it only makes sense that their sales training and sales solutions would also be available where they spend most of their time.
