Book Review - The Self-Confrontation Manual

John Broger's "Self-Confrontation" manual is probably the most exhaustive work available today to help the Christian conform their lives to be more like Christ. Even though the book is titled "Self-Confrontation," Broger accurately refers to the book as one of "self-condemnation." He systematically dissects the worldly philosophy of self-esteem by introducing believers to areas of their lives that may not have yet been exposed to the illuminating and cleansing power of the Word. This manual is not intended to be read simply as you would a typical book, but used instead as a roadmap to completely inventory and restructure a person's life.

Broger's book is broke into three main sections. First, he establishes the biblical foundation for change. The second is an application to specific problem areas that need addressing. The final section is a conclusion consisting of three chapters. He structures each of the twenty-two lessons (chapters) into a minimum of five basic segments. He closes with an open book examination in chapter twenty-three and a lesson on biblical counseling training in chapter twenty-four.

He starts each chapter with a purpose and outline of the lesson. It is followed by a series of biblical principles. This lays out in clear detail with supporting scriptures the background and justification for the topic studied. Third, he gives an in-depth bible study on the topic. In some chapters, he expands the bible study into several sub-sections to further advance his point. Forth, he provides homework which at times will refer the reader to accomplish charts or worksheets located in the appendix. Finally, he provides a study guide for daily devotions which include memory verses.

Broger leads off the book by offering an exhortation on the necessity and the believer's ability to change biblically. He introduces the reader to the first of his 105 principles: "God's plan for you to change in a biblical way centers on His Son, Jesus Christ." This in essence lays the basis for the remainder of the manual.

The second main section examines the nature and solutions to eight specific problem areas that affect and can afflict many Christians. He uses thirteen chapters to address the subjects of dealing with self, anger and bitterness, interpersonal problems, the marriage relationship, parent-child relationships, depression, fear and worry, and life-dominating sins.

The book's conclusion contains three chapters. The first is God standards for life which is designed to re-motivate the reader. This chapter charges the Christian with the importance and necessity of adhering to God's word and plan. The next chapter is the course exam. The exam is intended to be open book and the answers are taken from the material aforementioned studied. The final chapter gives an explanation of biblical counseling training. It briefly teaches the student about the nature of biblical counseling, why we should train believers to counsel biblically, and how to prepare oneself for training in biblical counseling.

Broger's Self-Confrontation Manual can be an extremely effective resource in counseling. It would not be very realistic however, to offer this as a homework assignment to a counselee. Its depth, detail, and amount of work required to complete the assignments would overwhelmed most, if not all counselees. Instead, I found it most useful as a reference manual in correlating topics to key areas of scripture, and as a resource to create homework assignments. In addition to being a helpful reference tool, it confronts the counselor with areas in his or her life that need to be brought under the dominion of Jesus Christ. This will improve the counseling process as counselors are required to remove a plank from their own eye before trying to "remove the speck out" of someone else's eye.

What Happens When We Die?

What is death? For a Buddhist, it is more of a continuation than an ending. But what is it that continues; this is the tricky part. If you describe the Christian soul as being a repository of everything a human being has done while on earth and into eternity, then the part that continues for a Buddhist would be that soul, but only the impersonal part, the part that merely records our actions. A Buddhist calls this... karma.

Karma is a summation of all of our actions, and not limited to only this lifetime; karma has its roots in many lifetimes past, and continues in future lifetimes. So for Buddhists, death is not a one shot, make or break deal; death happens again and again. However, the karma can be resolved, ended, and therefore not eternal as a soul is.

When one body dies, another immediately replaces it, as our karma morphs from corpse to fetus. Or, we might not end up a fetus at all; there are numerable alternative destinations, thirty one of them, and all of them different fields of existence depending upon our actions this time around as well as our actions in past lifetimes. We could even temporarily be reborn in a heaven, but we could not stay there. We eventually would have to inhabit a human form again.

The fact that we made it into human form this time is a good sign. This indicates that we can pretty much count on rebirth in the human realm again, perhaps after a temporary stint in heaven unless something quite dramatic happens in this lifetime (which can either be good or bad)! Actually, it is possible to alter our destiny by our actions, and this is what Buddhists attempt to do. By altering their actions, Buddhists not only affect their destinies in the next lifetime, but also make this lifetime much easier.

Therefore, every lifetime prepares us for the next, and if a Buddhist is really clever, she or he can get out of the revolving door of rebirth and temporary heavens, and never have to worry about future lives again! This is called enlightenment, but until that occurs, the Buddhist must endure the lifetimes to come, regardless of their unpredictability.

At the moment of death, our strongest karma or trauma of this lifetime will arise in our minds. If we killed someone, that memory will pop up. If we were a Mother Teresa, a memory of all our kind acts will arise. Also visions might appear to us. We might see the weapon that we used to kill with, or we might see the faces of the children we have saved. These are called Kamma-nimittas.

Other common visions are ones that preview our next world, give us a peek so to say. This happened to my sister-in-law just before she died, "I see a beautiful place, with beautiful people, and beautiful music."

If we are Buddhist meditators and have trained our minds to simply observe thoughts, emotions, visions and nimittas as they arise and not become attached to them, then whatever comes up at the time of death will not affect us, especially the psychological fear of death and the pain and suffering that usually goes along with dying.

This moment of death is extremely important, and connects us to our next lifetime. We must prepare for this moment by living not only a virtuous life, but by understanding all about the mind from an intuitive level. We have to train ourselves well enough so that we can remain tranquil and unattached during our last conscious moments. If we are attached to our possessions, to our life, or to anyone that we leave behind, our next lifetime will reflect those desires by plopping us back into the same circumstances, only to relive them all again, and suffer old age, disease and death innumerable times.

When the meditator faces death with calmness and equanimity, this affects the future field of existence. As a matter of fact, just reading this article will have a subconscious effect on the reader. If the reader is also able to have friends assembled at the time of death that understand things at these levels and therefore doesn't project an atmosphere of doom and gloom, the next lifetime could be very favorable, especially if those assembled have trained their minds with meditation or contemplative prayer, which neutralizes any projections of fear.

So in summation, Buddhists believe in rebirth, not the reincarnation of a personality. Rebirth is the transference of karma, or our past actions, which mold our characters and tendencies. The body will be new, the brain and memory will be new, but our penchants will remain. The karma that fueled our actions this time around will do so again, until we are able to break karma's chains.

How to break the chains? A good way is simply to meditate. This not only breaks the chains very quickly, but also has the potential to break them forever. The deep contemplative prayer of the Christian mystics works too.

Stop that "Out of Control" Leader Today Before Destruction - Nu Leadership Series

"Character is higher than intellect. A great soul will be strong to live as well as think."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Let's explore why leaders fail to do what is expected, wanted and /or needed. You got this "hot shot" manager who pushes everyone around because he's the boss. Employees hate him. You don't care for him, either. How did he become a manager with that nasty attitude? He's out of control. Let's take a train ride on the leadership express. First stop is organizational culture. Ideally, organizations should promote leaders with high, morale character. Organizations make the mistake of promoting high achievers with no people skills and little integrity. That leader becomes a cancer and destroys any team chemistry in the organization. That leader does not model the way for employees. Yukl, a leadership expert, notes that the values espoused by a leader should be demonstrated in his daily behavior and be done consistently. Second stop is leadership theory. Leadership is more than a pretty face, nice body, and a glowing personality (aka the Trait Theory). According to Hackman and Johnson (leadership gurus), early researchers assume that an individual's physical/psychological features were the best indicators for leadership success; however, there is no guarantee for getting a good leader on this criterion.

Finally, last stop is character. It's important for organizations to select the right leader as the first prevention mechanism. Character does count. Employees want a leader high in integrity. Therefore, an organization should be careful in selecting their leaders. Organizations should select a qualified leader, but the leader should reflect the organization's values. Do you respect your leadership team? If not, why should your employees? Build your leadership from the inside out. Start today and improve organizational chemistry..

House of Colors Open to the World

Manipuri dancers inspire audiences with a glimpse of Manipur's Vaishnava culture, and during the early 1970's, Srila Prabhupada expressed to Bhakti Svarupa Damodara Swami that the Manipuri traditions of music and dance, such as rasa-lila and sankirtana, are so infused with the Vaishnava culture that they are cultural representations of Krishna consciousness.

If it was properly presented, then these cultural expressions could be extremely powerful not to mention inspirational. By listening to the words of Prabhupada, Bhakti Svarupa Damodara Swami formed Ranganiketan in 1987. Ranganiketan, which means the house of colors, began its very first international tour during the 90s. It had engagements in Europe and North America.

Since then the troupe has put on nearly four hundred performances for more than a quarter of a million people on four continents. It has even appeared at the University of California in Berkeley, at EPCOT Center in Walt Disney World, and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Ranganiketan is the most extensively booked performing arts company of its kind from all of India.

The troupe even gives special emphasis to educational programs. More than half of Ranganiketan's performances take place before young audiences. They are also carefully to be sure they create instructional materials that are prepared for the students for the performance. They also give a number of lectures and demonstrations, which will help them to further understand what they have seen much better.

The cultural activities of Ranganiketan do not stop at the stage door, because troupe members are also adept in various offstage arts. They are especially adept to the creation of Manipuri prasadam, which is the traditional cuisine that has delighted people wherever the troupe goes. Ranganiketan performances give samples of the music, the dance, and the martial arts of northeastern India. Thang-ta is a weapons- oriented form of martial arts that dates from the time of the Mahabharata.

Both men and women learn these arts from an early age. With the precision and the strength that Ranganiketan artists demonstrate in the various forms of Thang-ta, using various instruments as swords, shields, scimitars, and occasionally their bare hands. The acrobatic drum dances are very powerful demonstrations of the sankirtana with its blend of complex beats with the devotional mood of Narottama Dasa Thakura. They are performed with the pung, known as the Manipuri mridanga, these drum dances serve as an auspicious invocation before the performance of the rasa lila.

The classical version of the rasa lila is the most important of the various types of Manipuri devotional dance, because it expresses the quintessence of the Vaishnava culture and philosophy. This is a yearning of the individual soul to surrender to the supreme soul, Lord Sri Krishna. Through that surrender, the soul attains transcendent happiness and the highest fulfillment of spiritual desire. In Manipur, rasa lila performances can feature over one hundred dancers and can last up to twelve hours. On tour, of course, the dances are shorter and the dancers are much fewer, but they still give an authentic taste.

Train - Hey Soul Sister

Like the video? Twitter it! (Click Update) tinyurl.com I'm glad Train came out with a new single! I fell in love with Train when I first heard "Calling All the Angels" years ago. I shot the video footage on iMovie and dumped it into Adobe Premiere to get the "box effect". I first shot video/audio of myself in the black shirt and guitar and added more parts as I went along. Usually, I would practice all the parts a few times before I actually recorded, but this video was all one take after the other which is why it sounds a little messy. I don't mind though! :) FREE MP3: www.davidchoimusic.com OFFICIAL ► www.davidchoimusic.com FACEBOOK ► http TWITTER ► twitter.com CD'S & SHIRTS ► bit.ly MYSPACE ► www.myspace.com ITUNES ► www.itunes.com MAILING LIST ► bit.ly

Chicken Soup For The Network Marketer's Soul - The Little Girl Who Wanted To Fly

The Little Girl Who Wanted To Fly

Here is just ONE of the many inspiring uplifting MLM stories from the new book Chicken Soup For The Network Marketer's Soul

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory or defeat.

Theodore Roosevelt

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who wanted to fly. She would lie on her back on the soft green grass, and stare wide-eyed at the immense blue sky. "Look," she would ponder to herself, twirling a blade of grass in her teeth, "Those geese are flying high. And the clouds are floating by."

A rare plane would sometimes pass by in the sky high above her sight, leaving the white tracer of its tail across the sky of her mind.

One day, when I grow up, she mused to herself, I too, will fly.

Carefully, she tucked her dream inside her heart. Young as she was, she already learned that if she shared her dream, others would shatter it with ridicule and put downs, scorn and sarcasm. So she smiled to herself, bided her time, and kept her secret dream in silence.

Years went by. The little girl grew and became a beautiful young woman.

Every so often, the little girl/beautiful young woman would take her secret dream out of the secret place inside her heart, spread it out, and remember her innermost secret desires: YES! Someday, she would fly!

In school, she learned to only put down on paper what the teachers liked so she could get those big bright A's on her report card. And get approval from all the adults around her. She never mentioned her dreams to anyone again. As her new adult life became busy, even she forgot about them.

After graduation, she got a J-O-B.

That's when she learned a very cruel lesson. She could work fifty-one weeks of the year, commuting two hours a day on a hot crowded subway, to get one week off a year to lie on her back, stare at the sky, and remember her dream of how much she wanted to fly. But now, she was so tired from working fifty-one weeks of the year, commuting two hours a day, and enduring the suffocating hot ride on the packed subway train every day. At work she put up with the on-going insulting remarks of her fellow workers who spent hours every day telling each other sad and depressing stories of their lives while making wounding, sarcastic jokes at others' expense. They went on and on about how much they hated their jobs. Complaining, whining, belittling. How they all wished they could do something else.

Somehow, the little girl realized these people would never leave the prisons of their own minds. They seemed to enjoy, in some perverse way, complaining.

Our little girl, who was now a beautiful young woman on the outside, but still a girl in her heart, buried her treasured dreams deeper inside herself. In fact, she was so busy and so tired, that even she forgot all about them.

One day a friend invited her to an "Opportunity Meeting." To her surprise, everyone at the Opportunity Meeting was talking about wanting to fly!

Live the life of your dreams. What you believe, you can achieve.

The sky's the limit.

Fly HIGH.

Create the life of your dreams.

Oh my! The little girl/beautiful young woman wondered if she was dreaming . . . or hallucinating. All of these people were talking about their dreams! And some of the people were actually living their dreams.

The little girl/young wide-awake woman was spellbound as she listened to story after story unfold of people growing into the realization that they could actualize their dreams! They could make their deepest desires a physical reality. People were making their dreams their real living realities!

The little girl began pinching herself to see if she was real.

As she left the Opportunity Meeting, clutching her new dream-building kit, she was beyond excited, thrilled, and on-fire! She couldn't wait to get home and start studying all about it and listened late into the night to the CDs about people who were flying-people who were living their dreams; people who only worked ten hours or twenty hours a week-from beaches, from sailing ships, from home offices, from verandas! People who did not commute two hours a day on hot, crowded, stifling subway trains.

People who were their own bosses; people who made their own decisions on where to work, when to work, and how to work; people who had their own businesses; people who worked from home, or from wherever they wanted to work.

"WOW! WOW! WOW," was all the little girl/young woman could say. The next day she flew home from work. She was even more on fire and called up her friend who had taken her to the Opportunity Meeting.

"How do I get started? What do I do? Please tell me how to do this. I want to fly!"

Being an exceptionally smart young woman, she listened carefully and then followed all the advice and suggestions of the people who were already flying.

Learning to fly, of course, has its ups and downs. Nevertheless, the young woman kept up with her flying lessons. Every day, she practiced more. She studied. She mentored. She trained. In the beginning she went out with her flying instructors. Until the big day came-she went out solo! She got her wings. WOW!

Today, she has her own flying school and teaches people all around the world how to fly in the jet of their own dreams. She teaches people how to use the vehicle of Network Marketing to create a life that others only dream of: a lifestyle of play, fun and ease; a lifestyle with more money than bills; a lifestyle that helps other people create more money than bills; a lifestyle that empowers people to live their dreams; a lifestyle that includes lots of flying-flying to all kinds of fun events, flying to conventions, flying on dream vacations that she keeps winning from her Network Marketing company, flying to the bank to deposit her paychecks.

Most importantly, she flies to the heights of her own innate God-given talents, dreams and achievements. She is living her life to its fullest potential, growing and stretching her wings everyday, learning to fly better and faster, further and wider.

All of her new friends and fellow Networkers are the most incredibly positive people. People who want to grow and evolve. People who aspire to be the very best they can be. People who study and apply self-improvement and pure communication and who see the best in other people, speak of the best in other people, and mastermind to help each person fulfill their own great destiny. No more whiners and complainers. She's living a life that others have long forgotten how to dream of.

Her greatest thrill is to meet people who forgot their dreams, and to remind them of their own special dreams, to wake them up to their dreams. And to show them how to fly to whatever heights they want to go.

Ahhh . . . Now our brilliant young beautiful soulful woman runs her own flight school! And this great leader has become an incredible capt

The sky's the limit!

Network Marketing is the vehicle.

Freedom of time and money and lifestyle is the destination.

How Car ECU and FM Transmitters Help

Nowadays, all cars available in the market already have the latest incorporated engine technology. The cars engine has significantly evolved from the very old carburetor to the latest Engine Control Unit or commonly known as the Car ECU.

The main job of the Car ECU is to control the different features of the engines internal combustion during its operation. The Car ECU that was used in most of the cars earlier had fixed engine parameters. Earlier, the ECUs function is just to control the amount of fuel injected into the engines cylinder at each engine cycle. Now after the latest advancement in technology, the Car ECU that is equipped in every modern car has the ability to control the cars ignition timing, other peripherals and the variable value timing. With the ECUs sensors, it has the ability to monitor your cars engine, gathering important information about different parameters.

After checking on your cars engine, you are now ready to hit the road. While driving your car, you can add something that will make your soul alive. Perhaps a little beat from your favorite music hits will be fine. You can plug in FM transmitters to your iPod or MP3 players that will translate songs from your iPod in to a radio signal that will be broadcast in the local area.

FM transmitters will be a greater deal than getting an iPod car kit. Just make sure to consider the area you live in first. Why? Because the heavier the radio signals in a particular area, the poor signal you will get resulting to poor sound quality. Other advantages you can get in having an FM Transmitter is that it can be installed easily and it can be moved from one vehicle to another. Enjoy listening to your favorite songs while stuck in the traffic or while driving in a long road trip.

Did the Russians Find a Way to Train People in Using Telekinesis?

In Russia, before the revolution that put Stalin in power, scientists were eagerly studying the use of hypnotism and parapsychology. Throughout the thirties, these experiments continued but ceased abruptly when Stalin took power. The Soviet Union banned study of para-psychology as an attempt to undermine the doctrines of the state. During the cold war in the 1960's, a story in "Science and Life", a French magazine, reported that the United States was employing experiments in telepathy to communicate with submarines. This story shook the military awake and again, the USSR was in the race to learn of the paranormal.

The Soviets began to use all means at their disposal, to not only achieve the same results they believed the Americans were after but also find new ways to use and teach psychic ability. Even though the Soviet scientist, Professor L.L.Vasilev, continuously published articles earlier, it wasn't until the report of the American telepathy study, did the Soviet Union take stock in the possible uses of PSI potential for the military. They regrouped and began studies all through the country and in Czechoslovakia.

The experiments studied not just telepathy but also clairvoyance, bionics, dowsing, hypnotism and telekinesis. There were other studies and all geared to military use. The benefit of dowsing in military action actually became clear during the Vietnam conflict when the United States military forces used it to find the tunnels and caches of the Vietcong.

Both the United States and Russia studied telepathic messages as a back up method of communication for astronauts. While the Soviets first attempted the experiments, in 1971 Edgar Mitchell made 150 different attempts during the Apollo 14 mission to the moon to send his thoughts back to earth. The results proved that it was possible to transmit thoughts through the vastness of space. Edgar Mitchell later started the Institute of Noetic Sciences.

During the studies into parapsychology, Russians gathered up much of the German studies conducted during WWII. The Natzi's were vigilant into the study of the occult and mysticism. One influence was actually a Russian female known as Madame Blavatsky who is given recognition as the leader in the "new age" movement.

There was a huge public race to outer space in the 60's and 70's but few knew of the race to inner space between the two cold war factions. Russia experimented in remote viewing and telekinesis in a haphazard fashion. Many of those that learned the PSI technique used breathing techniques derived from Yoga.

Victor Adamenko, a member of the Soviet biophysical team, trained people in the art of telekinesis using hypnosis and a dialectric cube as a source of energy. Eventually these people learned to charge their own body and eliminate the need for the aids.

One of the most important studies came from A. S. Roman, a physician whose credentials are impeccable. He studied psychic self-regulation and found that you could influence your body with thought. None of the subjects trained received selection based on any particular skills, which means that the ability to learn PSI is within the reach of all. It simply takes practice and the right training to shorten the time to the ultimate goal.

Dance Shows Are Not New to Television

Despite what many people think, dancing on television is not new at all. The history of dance shows on networks is surprising to many, but dance programming has been around since the beginning of television. There is no doubt the recent network dance shows have brought back the desire to dance. After all, dance is, indeed, all the rage these days. Check almost any television network and you will find a dance show. With so many shows hitting the major networks, there is a renewed interest in dance, especially among teens. Many teens both experienced and not, are watching the shows for the latest moves and the latest dance fashion.

Dance programs are becoming a hit more and more everyday, and the audience is growing hot for it everyday. Such shows as Dancing with the Stars are taking dance enthusiast by storm. Turning on and dancing in step with their favorite program is what millions of viewers are doing each night. So much, that there has been four new dance programs slated for upcoming shows. Why is dance television engaging both and young? Mostly, people watch to see what the latest moves are, while others are watching to see what the latest fashion their favorite dancer is wearing. Some teens are watching the shows and running out to their favorite dance studio and asking to be taught similar moves and the fashionist are running out to a dancewear boutique and buying similar dancewear.

But, dance themed shows are nothing new. They've been around for quite some time. Such shows as The Arthur Murray Show aired in the 50's and were hosted by the famous Arthur and Kathryn Murray themselves. Yes, the same people who have chains of Murray Dance Studios you see across the United States. The 1960 brought great shows such as the Groovy Show and Hollywood A Go Go. But it was Soul Train, which aired in 1970, which brought tight dance grooves into the American home. People, both black and white would tune in not only for the music, but to catch a glimpse of new and innovative dance grooves. Soul Train was pivotal in launching the resurgence of people's interest in dancing and dance fashion. It was a way the TV audience to dial into current dance and trends in fashion. The 80's and 90's brought about shows such as Club MTV, VH1 Dance Machine, and the influential Dance Party USA on the USA network. The shows were very popular among the Generation X crowd leading the way for the current offering on networks now.

There will always be dance shows on television. Dance and the music that drives it, changes with each newer generation adding new spice and flavor to what is possible on the dance floor or in the studio, even if you are luck, on a prime time slot. And as with previous generations there is a rabid following of their favorite dance show. Current dance shows are no different and it explains why the networks are jumping over each other to get to the next best dance show.

Discover How to Romance a Man

Men like to be romanced just as much as women do. Think about it, women get their hair done regularly, we go do spas, and we get weekly massages. We expect to receive flowers and taken out to fancy dinners, but what do we do for our men? If your man is worth keeping, then it's best that you learn how to please him in other places than the bedroom. After a while, if there is not romance in a relationship, the relationship can go sour. This leads to boredom and a higher risk to stray on both of your part. To minimize that risk, it's best to find ways to romance and seduce your man and keep him wanting more.

Date Night

To make sure that the demands of every day life doesn't interfere with your relationship, talk to your man and set up a date night. A date night can be set for one day out of the week that the both of you eliminate all distractions and spend quality time with each other. Some ideas are to sit at home veg and watch movies. You can go out to the movies and to a nice dinner. Or make it fun and go bowling or to a ball game. Whatever you do, make sure that your time in uninterrupted and your focus is only on him.

Surprises

No matter what they say, men love to receive surprises just as much as women do. Put aside some money and buy him a gift he'll love like playoff tickets or a premier movie tickets. These are gifts he's sure to love.

Love Notes

Men like to know that they are thought of during the day. Put a sexy note in his brief case that tells him what he can expect when gets home. Send him a text message every so often to let him know just how special he is. That should give him a huge boost of motivation to get through his day.

Don't leave your man out. He deserves to be romanced just as much as you do. Taking the time to please him will add spark to your relationship and make you both happy.

Marriage to One's Self

Marriage. The word conjures up images, partnerships and emotions; some good, and some not so good. According to the dictionary Marriage is; a) the institution whereby men and women are joined in a special kind of social and legal dependence for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family; b) to be united in an intimate or close union; c) the wedding ceremony. Let's propose that one could join in union one's body mind and soul. This type of union would bring about wholeness to a person's totality. In other words this joining of one's body mind and soul would provide a deeper understanding of one's issues, strengths and weakness. To be fully healthy is to be in connection with the body, mind, and soul. Listening to each of these three parts of ourselves begins an understanding of the connection of the body, mind and soul which will develop. Each of our lives would be enhanced and lived more fully if we stopped and married ourselves.

Five years ago I embarked on a journey to Alaska and ended up marrying myself. I had wanted to perform a marriage ceremony for myself knowing the importance of uniting all parts of myself. I received this idea from the author known as Sark. As I prepared for my journey to Alaska I thought about my own unifying marriage. Alaska is a place I've created in my mind, a place that I would escape to from all my troubles. Also this is the one place I've always wanted to go visit since I was at least eight years old. Preparing for this adventure, I thought about what I needed, what I wanted, and what I could afford. Besides I didn't want to just see Alaska, I wanted to Experience Alaska. That meant a true adventure and expedition.

Being an avid bicyclist I was sent a brochure from Alaskan Bicycle Adventures and this seemed like an easy way for me to experience Alaska. After all I've ridden many miles on my bicycle already, and could train for that part of the trip easily. Alaskan Bicycle Adventure offered many types of tours, and way too many good ones to choose from. I looked and studied the brochure, and chose the Hike and Bike tour. For one thing it gave me the most days in Alaska, and the activities were varied. I hadn't been hiking in over 20 years. (I don't count the walks I've taken around Oklahoma's lakes and prairies.) I knew that I would have to find some hills to practice hiking, and I also had to break in my hiking boots.

The very next questions for me to make the final decision to go were; "Could I afford this trip financially? Was I deserving of such a trip? Could I allow myself to borrow the money for such a trip? Could I let myself have something that I've wanted since I was a child? Could I go it alone?" Those questions were difficult to answer. They needed an answer, and the answer would determine my decision, and I firmly believe the health and welfare of myself. By taking this tour, I wouldn't be totally alone. That would ease my mind a bit. No, I wouldn't know anyone there. I don't like traveling alone, and not sharing the trip with other people that I know and love. I needed this trip, and the good thing about doing a tour is that they would be making all of the decisions of where we would be lodging, and dining. I would be one among many. The answer came clearer to me that I was about to embark on the best thing for me. I deserved the trip to Alaska, and I could borrow the money and take five years to pay it back. Alaska here I come.

I made a conscious decision to be open and outgoing to make this trip enjoyable, and life changing. I tend to be a little shy reserved girl who doesn't speak up much. I have the ability to be more outgoing than I usually am. To me a marriage was an event, not a process. I have since changed my opinion about marriage. Marriage is a process, and the preparation of this Alaskan adventure was the beginning of my marriage process. I was embarking in a long term relationship with all aspects of myself. I was learning and getting acquainted with my limitations and expectations, my moods, along with my strengths and weaknesses. No matter how easy I felt the tour was going to be, I knew I was going to be put to the test on this adventure. This adventure would require me to become unified, or to put it other words to marry myself.

The tour group, and guides all met in the waiting area of the motel. Rules and tidbits of information were shared among us. Then our luggage was loaded up, and we were off on our adventure. First stop a climb up Flattop Mountain. Flattop was my first truly mountain top experience. I didn't have any trouble climbing until the summit was in sight. I had two left feet, and my legs were hurting. I hadn't climbed enough stairs in preparation for mountain climbing. I even had to have one of the guides help me put my feet in the right direction to help me become more balanced. Thus began my first step towards marriage.

What makes this a truly remarkable marriage and adventure is that I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Not an easy dis-ease to handle when you want to be active. I honestly don't know if I'm going to be able to do everything that the brochure has said, or if I am going to ride in the van. When I state that I'm very tired, I am very tired. After that mountain climb my body was worn out, and when we arrived at Whittier, I stayed in the waiting area for our cruise boat to take us to Valdez via the Prince William Sound. The boat ride was best for me, because I found a seat inside the cabin up front, and slept, and watched the world go by. I relaxed. My legs hurt, I was tired, but I was thrilled too. My mood was good, but my body was tired. I began to change on this trip. I was sensing a new self forming, I was becoming outgoing, I would ask for help when I needed it, and I was stepping into becoming whole. I was consciously aware of my energy levels.

The fourth day was the hardest on me. I struggled in every sense of the word. I hadn't slept well the night before. My body was too tired. Anyway, I woke up to rain, and very cool temperatures. This was a day in which I would need every ounce of energy, and all kinds of mental and emotional strength. We were going to climb up a glacier. Gulkana Glacier is not very steep, but it is icy, and we had to hike on lots of rocks pushed down from the glacier. The rain was steady, but not soaking, more like a steady drizzle. I am on my period, and this day would be my heaviest. I'm thinking that maybe I should stay in the vans. Oh but I don't want to be alone. I came to experience Alaska. I really didn't have the right clothing to wear hiking in such a cold, cool, rainy climate. I needed waterproof clothing instead of water resistant clothing. I used what I had, but I needed some gloves for my hands. I asked and was loaned a pair of gloves. Bless Mort's extra gloves. The hike was long, with a gradual climb up. I struggled with every step. My meditation that morning was joy and ecstasy. I was miserable, cold, wet outside, wet with sweat underneath my clothing and I was wet inside.

Walking on the glacier was easier than walking on the boulders and loose rock. Above us on either mountain peak we could see snow falling. We weren't that far below the peaks, but all we had was rain, and about 45 degrees. We ate our lunch on the Glacier, and looked around. I plopped on my butt. I couldn't move much more. I was so tired, and then I was thinking what goes up must come down. How in the world am I going to make it down? In this moment in my life I don't like rain. I know the value of rain, but I don't like doing things in the rain. My body is worn out, and I need rest desperately. I need all of me to get down. So, as we descended, I kept talking to myself: "This was hike is joyful. The rain is much needed. The view from the Glacier is wonderful. This was a good investment. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. I can do this; I can reach the vans on my own power. I am enjoying this adventure."

Cold, wet, unnerved with my period, I made it to the vans. I also knew that I was finished for the day. There wasn't anything else I could do physically. I needed a shower and sleep. As we got in the vans, I stayed right there even when we stopped at the store to buy gas and let everyone have a break. Then the rest of the crew decided to ride their bicycles to the next Inn. Not me. I was heading for trouble, and if I wanted to participate in the rest of the trip I had better take good care of myself this day, and evening. I knew I had pushed myself way past my limitation. I did it, and I'm very happy.

A very important event happened on that glacier. I became whole. I listened to my body mind and soul. I integrated myself, and the marriage of my wholeness took place. It wasn't a ceremony, and it didn't have any pomp. My marriage to myself took me pushing myself to my limits, and listening to my critical self, my nurturing self, and my soul. I would be able to start living my life in harmony, to live in the balance of physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of my life.

Pondering on my Gulkana Glacier experience, I performed a ceremony a couple of days later, when I had more time to myself, and when I was less fatigued. I stood looking at Lake Lucille from my balcony in Wasilla, Alaska, and quoted some vows to myself. I Carrie take my masculine, my feminine, my critical self, my self confidence, my inner child, to listen, to learn to take care of for better for worse, for rich or for poor. I will learn to be kind to myself, and heed the parts that speak the loudest for they have something to teach me. I take my dark side, my light side, and I take my sacred self and my irreverent self. All are a part of me as a whole being. I will be whole. I will accept myself as a truly wonderful person made in God's image. I am blessed beyond measure, and I am very thankful for this adventure. Whether I like it or not I'm very thankful for the hard times upon the Glacier. I am an adult, a child, an adolescent, sacred, spiritual, and much, much more. I am me, and I love me.

A very simple ceremony took place. I became whole, and I acknowledged that wholeness with a ceremony unto myself, and the nature of Lake Lucille. The adventure was not over, but I had a breakthrough. I felt happy, and joyful. Sark was right. Marrying oneself can make a turn for the better. I was willing to make that turn. I became a whole person. I became whole because I listened to all the parts of my self, and I heeded the advice of my body, my mind and my soul. No, it doesn't have to be a big adventure for a marriage of oneself to work; you can do it today in your own backyard. All that is needed is for you to listen and heed the connection of body, mind and soul.

Clinical Depression - A Real Physical Ailment

Depression is a very real physical disease. It's caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and can result in a life-alternating situation like the birth of a child or a traumatic event in your life. It's the kind of depression where you literally cannot function in the real world. You can't eat, sleep, laugh, or enjoy life as you did before. You have feelings of guilt, inadequacies and complete sadness. You may sleep a lot or perhaps you're not able to sleep at all because you are awakened with anxiety and panic. Your mind works overtime and your thought processes are completely twisted and incomprehensible to you or anyone else.

There are thousands upon thousands of people that suffer from clinical depression and for some, it becomes so unbearable that they take their own lives because they are ashamed to ask for help or feel they have no one to turn to. Society doesn't help when a person can be scrutinized for becoming lazy, unsocial and housebound. Depression is seen as a weakness, especially for men. Men are far more less likely to seek help for a depressive condition then women because they feel as though they will be judged and looked upon as less than a man.

I had a conversation with someone today, a female, who felt it necessary to say that had I sought out the Lord to heal my wounded psyche and "re-train" my brain to gain a positive and happy outlook on life through the law of attraction, that perhaps I could have prevented the severe depression that I experienced after the birth of my son 24 years. She explained that she had suffered from clinical depression all of her life and with the good Lord above and the Law of Attraction, she was able to turn her life around and avoid the whole treatment route. This woman actually believed that what I experienced was in my control and that I basically could have willed it away had I gotten the skills to re-train my thought processes. This woman has never gone through a true clinical, chemical depression because if she had, she would have understood that everything she said to me was pure crap.

A true chemical imbalance in the brain is a disease that is no different than diabetes or asthma. Sometimes, it cannot be treated by therapy or positive thinking alone. For some, medication is a necessity and for many, it's a life-long treatment that should never be seen as a weakness or a crutch. Sometimes severe depression is only a physical flaw in the brain and doesn't require years of intense therapy to get to the root of a troubled soul. I know, because I deal with it on a day to day bases by way of medication to keep my physical brain working at its optimum levels. I'm just as normal as anyone else. I just need to take a pill every day to keep me that way. Would you deny a diabetic his insulin or an epileptic his anti-seizure medication? Clinical depression is no different than any other disease out there where there is no cure. It saddens me to know that there a lot of people like this woman I spoke to today that believe this disease can be "cured" by a little religion, positive thinking, and the law of attraction. Stop the madness!

The Salty Speech

Let your conversation be always full in grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Colossians 4:6

Many years ago Jill was working with a group of young people, trying to encourage them and train to go out and share their faith. They were going to visit the coffee houses and dance halls, and she asked me to have a final word with them. I agreed.

I told these young people that they must not forget that as soon as they began to talk to people about Jesus Christ, they were dabbling with eternal souls. They would be messing with eternal issues, and they were going to engage the spiritual forces of darkness. Their faces dropped quite dramatically as I explained all this.

My wife had a little talk with me afterwards. "I took about four weeks pumping up these kids, and it takes you about five minutes to stick a pin in them," she said. "All I did was to remind them that if they go out seeking to minister to people on any other basis than in the anointing of the Holy Spirit, anticipating his intervention through the power of God, they are going to fail," I replied.

She agreed with my theology, but not with my methods. For anyone to speak adequately the message of Christ; to know what to say it in a way that will be understandable and will elicit a favorable response, demands more intelligence than the sum of every congregation in the world. It requires that God, by his spirit, speak his word through people's lips, under the anointing of the Holy Spirit and with his own brand of miracles. That is what Paul is saying here.

He put in every practical term. "Let your conversation be always full in Grace. Don't expect people to listen if at times your mouth is as dirty and filthy as the rest of them. Make sure that what you say is "seasoned with salt"," that it is appetizing and interesting, has a tang to it, captures their imagination, and holds their attention. And ask God to show you ''how to answer everyone.''

That doesn't mean you must have all the answers. It does mean that you're ready to hear their questions and then respond as best you're able.

You say, "Stuart, this makes me feel so inadequate!" I hope it does. If you feel adequate in your abilities, you'll go out bumping around in your own power and make an absolute mess of things. Make sure you are inadequate, then get on your knees and pray for yourself and for others. Say, "God intervene in my life and in their lives so that we might become adequate witnesses of Jesus Christ."

But be prepared for the surprises. You never know how he might answer.

Soul Flavors - Restaurant Review

Mélange Caterers takes on the Restaurant Biz in Jersey City

The Neighborhood

Soul Flavors, a newbie restaurant in Jersey City, lies on a lovely tree-lined street in this up and coming area. The block would easily fit into Soho or Williamsburg Brooklyn in New York City, where you would find a mix of eclectic restaurants and artist haunts, but from the moment you step into the door of the Soul Flavors Restaurant located at 354 Grove Street in Jersey City, New Jersey, you will know that no matter where you are, you have surely arrived someplace special.

The Décor

The décor is wonderful with a style mix of old world Spanish and art deco. Simple, clean, airy and modern with beautifully tiled floors, artwork on the walls featuring local artists, cable lighting and a lovely tiled and modern powder room that any homeowner, let alone restaurateur, would die for.

The Food

There is something for everyone's palate here. You can count on silence at the table because the focus will surely be on the food. The appetizers include dishes like Aunt Nita's Cod Fish Cakes and Cuban Chicken Brochettes Served with Roasted Garlic Aioli & Red Pepper Coulis--and this is just for starters folks.

There are entrees like Braised Oxtails in Port Wine- Served with Scotch Bonnet Polenta, Orange Ginger Glazed Slow Cooked Pork Ribs. However, my personal favorite was the Curried Crab Cake Garnished with a Ginger Carrot and Cabbage Slaw served on a bed of lettuce. Not only was the taste wonderful, the presentation was amazing as well.

Do not make the mistake of ordering only diet soda or water here because the beverages are a delicious experience all by themselves. You must try the homemade lemonade and ginger beer.

Last, but certainly not least, if you find room for dessert you will know that it is not an afterthought here. On the menu are items like Carrot Cake, Lemon Pound Cake, Ms. Vicky's Bourbon Glazed Bread Pudding and the Sweet Potato Cheesecake. But once again, I have to mention my personal favorite (can you tell I had a good time eating here?). The warm peach cobbler with a crusty pastry top sprinkled with just a hint of cinnamon sugar served in individual ceramic cups reveals the same clean style coupled with amazing tastes that permeate throughout at Soul Flavors.

The Staff

The staff is professional, yet warm and friendly, attentive from the moment of your arrival. There is warmth exuded from everyone here as though they were welcoming you into their own homes.

The Minds Behind the Masterpiece

The presentation of the meals, the flavors, and the décor, all let you know you are dealing with true culinary artists with a history in delighting the palate as well as the eye, and with good reason. While Soul Flavors is a newbie in the restaurant game, the management is no stranger to creating culinary delights.

Soul Flavors is owned by husband and wife team Wayne and Jill Lyons. Wayne is half of the dynamic duo known as Mélange Caterers, a catering company with 18 years under its belt. Wayne Lyons and Shawn Santana teamed up 15 years ago in Hollis Queens and well, the rest is history. Their client list reads like a who's who including artists like Kanye West, Spike Lee, Ashford and Simpson and the list goes on. In their own 15 minutes of fame, they also appeared on an NBC cooking segment and a Discovery Channel show called The Party Planner. While movie and video production make up the bulk of their experience, their signature style is one of elegance and panache which they definitely bring to Soul Flavors.

The food is truly a soulful mélange of flavors, no pun intended here, that will surprise and please you at every turn. Even if you do not frequent the Jersey City area, I suggest you do go out of your way to experience Soul Flavors. It is a trek worth making and one you do not want to miss.

Don McLean- American Pie (with Lyrics)

Click more info for description* Please comment, rate, and subscribe. Thank you! Lyrics are also below- A long, long time ago... I can still remember How that music used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chance That I could make those people dance And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while. But february made me shiver With every paper I'd deliver. Bad news on the doorstep; I couldn't take one more step. I can't remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride, But something touched me deep inside The day the music died. So bye-bye, miss american pie. Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "this'll be the day that I die. "this'll be the day that I die." Did you write the book of love, And do you have faith in God above, If the Bible tells you so? Do you believe in rock 'n roll, Can music save your mortal soul, And can you teach me how to dance real slow? Well, I know that you're in love with him `cause I saw you dancin' in the gym. You both kicked off your shoes. Man, I dig those rhythm and blues. I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck With a pink carnation and a pickup truck, But I knew I was out of luck The day the music died. I started singin', "bye-bye, miss american pie." Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye And singin', "this'll be the day that I die. "this'll be the day that I die." Now for ten years we've been on our ...
